The number
What runway actually measures
Runway is how long the money lasts if nothing changes: your cash in the bank divided by what you burn each month. It is the number that decides how much time you have to make the next thing work — and the one investors ask for first.
Runway = cash ÷ (monthly costs − monthly income)
Getting it right
- Count every account you can actually spend from, not invoices you have sent.
- Use the costs that leave the account each month, including tax and VAT payments.
- If income already covers costs there is no burn, and no runway to run out of.

Runway calculator — What people ask about it
How many months of runway should I have?
The common rule is twelve to eighteen months after a raise, and never less than six. What matters more than the number is knowing it: the danger is not a short runway, it is a short runway you find out about in month five.
Does runway use gross or net burn?
Net burn — costs minus income. Gross burn ignores the money coming in and understates how long you have, sometimes badly for a business with real revenue.
Why is my real runway shorter than the calculator says?
Because a monthly average hides timing. A quarterly VAT payment, an annual insurance bill or a supplier invoice all land on one day, and a business can run out of cash in a month whose average looked fine.
